Motor Insurance Clampdown
The Department for Transport has unveiled plans for a new law making it illegal to keep a car, van, motorhome or other vehicle without the appropriate cover, as it attempts to crack down on the number of uninsured drivers. So, vehicle owners will be required to purchase motor insurance, even if they have no intention of getting out onto the roads.
Owners will be fined, even if the uninsured vehicle is sitting in their driveway, according to the Continuous Insurance Enforcement Proposals, set to be introduced in early 2011.
Those individuals who do not wish to use their vehicles on public highways will be required to apply for a statutory off-road notification.
Graeme Trudgill, technical director at the British Insurance Broker’s Association, when speaking to the Guardian, said: “We will also be calling for a national campaign on motor insurance.”
Referring to uninsured drivers, he said the new rules will be “key to resolving what is a massive problem”.
Last month, Ian Crowder of AA Insurance Services claimed that regulatory changes are set to help the motor insurance industry in 2010.
